The opening of this episode solidified my theory that Marnie is the Lady Mary of Girls. The peonies. The sweeping shots of a Hamptons (okay it’s North Fork, not the Hamptons) estate. The Downton Abbey-esque music! Complete Lady Mary.
It just so happens that this episode coincides with a few recent articles about Marnie and “Pretty Girl Privilege,” the theory that certain women that are more conventionally beautiful than other women are not usually faced with serious issues because other people fix the problems for them. Problems like, being a terrible person or being kicked out of the New York City apartment that you share with your (now) ex-boyfriend and having to pay for a new apartment. When pretty fades, as it inevitably does, and these women are faced with real issues they completely freak out. Marnie is freaking out. Read more
