As the pair dig deeper they learn that even the wealthiest families have skeletons in their closets, and there are those who will go to great lengths to keep their secrets buried. As the Cold War continues to escalate, suspicions of a Soviet double agent begin to grow within SIS. Before Noah can think twice the whole night has gone to hell, and he’s on the run from a pair of murderous drug dealers with no qualms about shooting at small targets.

The Muppets (2011)

Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) never met an oil field he couldn’t suck dry. So when Tex discovers a bountiful reservoir right underneath Muppet Theater, he begins drawing up plans to claim the land and start drilling. Little does Tex realize that devoted Muppets fan Walter is currently in Los Angeles with his best friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams), and that he’s not about to let one man’s greed spoil a good thing for everyone. With Kermit by their side, Walter, Gary, and Mary hatch a plan to put on a big telethon that will help them raise the ten million dollars needed to keep Muppet Theater standing.

84th Annual Academy Awards

February 27th, 2012

The 84th Annual Academy Awards has come and gone, leaving the internet in a titter over dresses and statuettes in its wake.

“The Artist”, a French silent film starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, was the darling of the evening with 5 Academy Award wins, including Best Picture – the first silent film to receive the honor since the original Oscar ceremony 83 years ago – and Best Actor for Dujardin. Dujardin became the first Frenchman to win an acting Oscar. “Oh, thank you. Oui. I love your country!” said Dujardin.

“Hugo”, set in 1930s Paris and tells the tale of an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station and is surrounded by the mystery of his father and an automaton, also won 5 awards and led the field with 11 nominations.

Meryl Streep swept up the golden statue for Best Actress in “The Iron Lady”, a biopic on former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Margaret Thatcher. It is Streep’s first Oscar win, despite 17 nominations, since she won 23 year ago for Sophie’s Choice. Streep humorously remarked when accepting her award, “When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America go, ‘Oh, no, why her again?’ But whatever.” Streep is only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.

Octavia Spencer picked up her first Oscar win for her role as Minny Jackson in “The Help”. Her genuine and heartwarming acceptance speech brought her a standing ovation. Christopher Plummer, the 82-year-old was nominated for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in “Beginners”, was witty with his acceptance speech and the fact that he is the oldest acting winner – edging out Jessica Tandy, who won as best actress for “Driving Miss Daisy” when she was 80 – by remarking to his gold Oscar statuette, “You’re only two years older than me, darling.”

American Film Institute’s 100 Best Films on Blockbuster!

January 13th, 2012

The American Film Institutes ‘s 100 Years, 100 Movies is an archive of the best films of the last 100 years. Determined by a jury of 1,500 film artists, critics and historians the films presented are classics such as Rear Window and Citizen Kane, more modern films like The Godfather and Rocky, and even newer blockbusters like Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings.

Watching all 100 greatest movies ever made is a “bucket list” choice for many people, but how to go about locating and viewing all 100 movies? Well, Blockbuster has made it easy and simple, with their AFI’s Top 100 list! There’s even a handy button you can use to add all of the films to your queue, watching the best movies has never been more simple.

Below are some of our favorites that made the list!

Sophie’s Choice

In 1949 aspiring writer, and film narrator, Stingo moves to Brooklyn where becomes embroiled in the lives of an unsteady couple, Holocaust survivor Sophie and research chemist Nathan. Nathan’s violent mood swings and the dark secret Sophie holds close seem likely to consume them in this heart wrenching film.

Clockwork Orange

In future Britain, charismatic delinquent Alex DeLarge is jailed and volunteers for an experimental aversion therapy developed by the government in an effort to solve society’s crime problem… but not all goes to plan. Stanley Kubrick’s scathing look at a not-so-distant future dominated by high-tech moral decay is an American cult classic.

Jaws

When a gigantic great white shark begins to menace the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it. The two-note score to Jaws is synonymous with suspense and danger, a simple alternation of E and F most can recognize instantly.

Forrest Gump

Tom Hanks stars as Forrest Gump, an unlikely figure in some of history’s most pivotal moments in the 60’s and 70’s. Through the journey of Forrest’s life – from college football star to war hero to ping pong champ and cross-country runner – his childhood friend Jenny is a constant figure in his heart. Forrest Gump was lauded with awards and remains a favorite nearly twenty years after it was released.
